Crock-toberfest is here just in time for fall weather.
Lows are finally hitting the 40s tonight, making it the perfect time for a chili cookoff. LocalMotion’s third Oktoberfest Saturday features one in Jess Lucas Park as part of Hapeville’s Downtown Live series. Family Life Ministries, a local charity, will host its annual cookoff.
“Family Life has been here in Hapeville since 1982 and they’re an organization that’s providing tangible help to local people in need,” said Jamie Jones, Hapeville’s special events coordinator. “The proceeds from the cookoff goes right back into the organization, helping people in Hapeville get staples like food and toilet paper.”
The cookoff kicks off at 6 p.m. with the winner announced around 7:30 p.m. There’s music to enjoy as well, with No Limitz kicking off at 5 p.m. Cody Bolden and the Road Hands follow at 7:30 p.m.
Hapeville’s Sombreros restaurant will be offering tacos and drinks in the park but you can also grab a drink from Beer Girl in the Arts Alley and walk over to the park thanks to the special event open container district in effect.
Funding for LocalMotion is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. It is also supported in part by Georgia Council for the Arts through the appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts also receives support from its partner agency, the National Endowment for the Arts.
But the highlight, of course, will be the chili. Jones said she’s excited to help support a local charity that does such good work in the community. She visited Family Life recently and saw them helping Hapeville residents in need, including one man who was there because his wife had become sick and his family needed some extra assistance.
“They’re helping individuals who live here in very, concrete tangible ways,” she said. “This event is a great way to come out and show you support the community and the work they do. It’s also a great way to have fun with one another and get to know your neighbors.”
